NEWDS has maintained the philosophy and value that “light illuminates the world beyond space,” and has provided people with new experiences about light and space. Additionally, we aim for simple and clear design that is faithful to the basics and does not deviate from the essence.
Hyunju Kim is the founder and Principal of NEWDS and has over 40 years of experience in lighting design. She started as a lighting designer through the Shilla Hotel new construction project.
Ms. Kim worked as Managing Director at Alto Lighting from 1983 to 2015. She had led the ALTO design team and participated in various lighting design projects for Hotels, Resorts, Museum, and Club House and etc. at home and abroad.
For over 20 years, from 1999 to 2019, Ms. Kim lectured lighting design courses as an adjunct professor at Seoul Institute of the Arts, Sangmyung University Graduate School of Art and Design, and Graduate School of Design at Dongduk Women`s University.
Currently, Ms. Kim is a member of the deliberation committee Seocho-gu Public Design Promotion Committee. And she is serving as Vice President of Korea Urban Landscape Design Association (KULDA) and Korea Woman Designer Association (KWDL), and a member of Korean Institute of Female Architects (KIFA) and The Korean Institute of Illuminating and Electrical Installation Engineers (KIIEE). She is also a standing advisor to the Korean Association of Lighting Designers (KALD) and has been a member of the Illumination Engineers Society of North America (IESNA) since 2003. She previously served as a deliberation committee member for Seocho-gu Office, Incheon Metropolitan City, Siheung City, Anyang City, Michuhol District Offices and Seoul City.
Additionally, Ms. Kim wrote the lighting part in the book `Interior Products and Coordination` with Interni & Deco, and co-wrote the book ‘Lighting Stories from the Experts’ and `Design innovator I loved`.
